This
rattle, known as caxixi ("ka-she-she"), is made from river grass
and colored with fabric dyes. It is produced throughout Ghana, wherever
the grass is available. You can get two different sounds by shaking the
rattle on its side and turning it so the pebbles either hit the calabash
or just hit the side of the rattle. Experiment with different ways of
shaking it to get different sounds and rhythms. Play one in each hand
so you can get a good variety of rhythms. We designed these for kids by
weaving the gourd inside the rattle for protection, but they're great
for all ages!
