These
wood block guiros are made from okpa wood, chosen especially for its great
resonance. The Ibo tribe of southeastern Nigeria has used these for years
in ceremonies and dances. To play them, hold the solid edge in your hand
and strike the open edge with the stick (included). You can get different
tones by hitting it in different places along the edge. You can also slide
the stick across the ridges for a "frog" sound! Some people
play these with two sticks for more variation.
